Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers to common questions about faulty, damaged and underperforming solar PV systems.

Why have my solar panels suddenly stopped working?

A complete loss of generation can have several causes, including an inverter problem, an electrical fault, connections or another system component. The panels themselves are only one possibility. Fault finding is the best way to establish where the problem actually is.

Can a solar system be repaired if the original installer has gone out of business?

In many cases, yes. Independent technicians can work on existing installations without the original installer remaining involved. Any available paperwork, equipment information or monitoring history can be helpful, but a technician can still start with the system and symptoms in front of them.

Does an inverter error mean I need a new inverter?

Not necessarily. Some errors relate directly to the inverter, while others can be triggered by conditions elsewhere in the solar installation. We recommend diagnosing the fault before deciding that replacement is required.

Can a single broken solar panel be replaced?

Often it can, but replacement needs to be compatible with the existing array and system design. On older installations, the original panel model may no longer be available, so electrical characteristics, dimensions and other factors need to be considered.

How do I know if my solar panels are generating less than they should?

A noticeable change in monitoring data or generation compared with the system's usual pattern can be a reason to investigate. Weather and seasonal daylight naturally affect output, so a short-term reduction does not automatically indicate a fault. Persistent or unexplained changes deserve a closer look.

Is it worth repairing an older solar PV system?

It can be. Solar panels may still have useful life even when an inverter or another component has failed. A technician will look at the condition of the installation, the failed equipment and the practical repair options before discussing whether continued repair makes sense.

Do solar panels in coastal parts of Dorset need extra attention?

Properties near the coast can experience exposed weather and salt-laden air, although location alone does not mean a solar system will develop a fault. The condition, age, installation quality and equipment all matter. Periodic inspection can be useful where you have concerns about an exposed system.
